VERONA is a sophisticated 7-shade pendant that serves soft, glare-free lighting with timeless grace and simplicity. When lit, the spherical pendant beautifully self-illuminates, making for a striking display in itself. VERONA was designed by Sven Middelboe in 1968.
VERONA is a prime example of functionalist design philosophy, in which form follows function. The need for glare-free lighting is achieved by bending and shaping the light around the ring shades. Sven Middelboe managed to design the shades so there are no visible suspensions between the shades - making them almost floating in air. The pendant provides soft and functional illumination that’s easy on the eyes, while elegantly keeping the light source obscured from view. All the while, the lamp itself lights up, becoming a timeless design piece in the room.
Sven Middelboe had a business degree, but design became his chosen path – and lighting his speciality. In the late 1940s, he had his own company as a lighting manufacturer together with the renowned designer and architect, Jørn Utzon. The collaboration between the two included the now iconic Sundowner and Tivoli pendants, which at the time were lacquered and hand-assembled under fairly primitive conditions.
Throughout his career, Sven Middelboe continued to experiment with various shade constructions and combinations, which resulted in the Verona pendant that was introduced in 1968. The series quickly became popular and today, Verona is regarded as one of the most iconic pendants in Sven Middelboe’s wide range of lighting designs.
Inside the city of Verona, the grand amphitheatre, Arena di Verona, is a fascinating sight. The concentric rows of stands at amphitheatre inspired Sven Middelboe to design a pendant that used the levels and bends from the highest row down to the arena level - forming a harmonious and soft line. Outside of the amphitheatre, the open vaults allow a view under the rows of stands, creating a lightweight appearance to the construction - as with the distinctive bend of the VERONA shades that gracefully conceal the light source.
When introduced in 1968, Sven Middelboe’s VERONA series understandably grew into the most popular design of his career. Verona is the type of design that stands out for its eye-catching simplicity - a genuine classic that is every bit as appealing today as it was four decades ago.
The captivating 7-shade pendant has a clean and timeless design that makes for a lifelong living companion. Each VERONA pendant is still carefully assembled by hand using the original spinning techniques. VERONA is available in seven sizes and two different materials.
